Cooley Takes Home Two China Business Law Awards

Firm honored in private equity & venture capital and healthcare, pharma & life sciences categories

Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai – April 8, 2020 – For the second year in a row, the China Business Law Journal has honored Cooley as part of its 2020 China Business Law Awards. The firm is one of only eight international law firms recognized with awards in the private equity & venture capital and the healthcare, pharma & life sciences categories.

In commending Cooley’s PE and VC work, the China Business Law Journal noted that the firm closed 55 financing transactions in Greater China and Asia last year, helping companies raise a total of close to $3 billion, and worked on more than 70 additional financing deals, representing both company-side and investor-side clients. Cooley also assisted clients in forming nearly 40 funds, 13 of which successfully closed and raised a total of $3+ billion.

The publication also highlighted high praise for Cooley shared by an anonymous client who is managing director at a VC company. “Cooley has demonstrated world-class professionalism, exactly what you would expect of a global firm,” the client said. “You can tell from working with Cooley that they have years of experience and a good grasp of the VC industry dynamics.”

Speaking to Cooley’s dominance in healthcare, pharma & life sciences, the China Business Law Journal noted that, in addition to a handling number of life sciences and healthcare-related VC financing deals last year, the firm represented innovative and disruptive companies in more than 10 corporate partnering and licensing transactions, with deal values exceeding $1.8 billion.

The China Business Law Awards are based on thousands of votes and recommendations – which reached a record high this year – received from in-house counsel, other senior corporate executives and legal professionals from around the world, as well as hundreds of submissions from Chinese and international law firms. In determining the winners, the China Business Law Journal carefully considers each firm’s landmark deals, cases and other notable achievements in the past year, in conjunction with the recommendations and comments received.
